Hawai`i is unlike anywhere else in the world, but in business communications, what’s true elsewhere is true here, too:
                         Experience is the difference.

Doug Carlson's professional background includes 35 years working in and with Hawai`i's news media, arguably the broadest media experience in the Aloha State.  He passes on lessons learned over those years in his programs and seminars, including media training and the 3-in-1 Communications Seminar with three essential must-know topics for supervisors.  Doug's service with Hawaiian Electric Company and his familiarity with power generation issues equip him to consult on public affairs for the emerging renewable energy industry. His web log -- Hawaii Energy Options -- offers straight talk about Hawai`i's dependence on fossil fuels and how to reduce it.
"Me and Him Are Killing English!"
The cautionary message for career-minded young adults in Doug's "Me and Him" book is: Leaders in business, education and the professions don't abuse English, as many of you routinely do.  The Honolulu Star-Bulletin carried an excerpt in 2007, and columnist Charles Memminger added his "lite" touch more recently.   Doug's website for the book has more information.  His "CHORE" blog was started after the October 2006 Hawai`i earthquakes to focus on the imperative to improve emergency communications.  Another blog -- Tsunami Lessons -- has advocated for the use of  international news media to disseminate tsunami warnings.  Hundreds of thousands of people around the Indian Ocean died in December 2004 when existing communications channels failed to warn them of their peril.  His Yes2Rail blog supports Honolulu's proposed rail transit system that will increase commuters' mobility by providing an alternative to sitting in traffic between West Oahu and Honolulu.
